How to Setup A Compound Medication

ScriptSure Cloud ERX v2.0 and later includes the ability to add compound medications to the drug database and then use that compound medication to prescribe it for any patient. Creating a compound is similar to creating adding a new medication in ScriptSure’s drug database. It is essentially a template you are creating, or in other words, a base version of the medication users can select and then modify as needed when prescribing the medication.

The steps below will show you how to Setup a compound medication for the users of the application. Any user with permission can setup a compound medication.

STEPS:

  1. Login to ScriptSure: www.scriptsure.com
  2. Search for and select any patient – you will not be prescribing for this patient. A patient must be selected to get to the Setup Compound screen.
  3. Click
  4. When the medication search window opens, click:
  5.  When the Compound Selection Window Opens, click

IMPORTANT NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT SEE THE SETUP BUTTON, YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSIONS TO SETUP A COMPOUND MEDICATION. YOU CAN SELECT AN EXISTING COMPOUND TO PRESCRIBE FOR A PATIENT, BUT YOU CANNOT CREATE A NEW ONE.

6. Click Add Compound:

 7. Enter an On‐Screen Title and an On‐Screen Comment for the Compound and Click . (The Title will be the name of the compound when selecting it on‐screen; this name is only visible in ScriptSure and does not send to the pharmacy! You will set the name of the drug the pharmacist will see in the next steps. The Comment is also only visible in ScriptSure and will indicate to users what it the medication is used for.)

8. The Compound Window will open and show the named medication on the left. Select the medication name on the left and on the right side of the screen you see under the General Tab the name and comment you just entered. (If you need to update these elements, you can click the EDIT button under the General Section). The next step is to click ADD MEDICATION under the Compound Section:

9. The Create Compound window will open. This screen represents all the information that will make up this COMPOUND medication template for users to select when sending a compound medication to the pharmacy. In the image below each of the RED numbered fields are required. Enter all fields and Click

NOTE: All these fields can be edited when a user sends the med to a pharmacy later.

  1. Enter a Drug Description: This is the name of the medication the pharmacy will dispense. It is best to include the name and strength in this field. (For example: Lorazepam 2mg/ml). NOTE: You have 105 characters for the Drug Description, but IT IS BEST TO KEEP THIS TITLE AT UNDER 50 CHARACTERS WHEN POSSIBLE.
  2. Enter a Quantity: This is the amount of the medication you are ordering. (For Example: 30)
  3. Enter the Qualifier: This drop‐down field refers to how the medication should be dispensed (in what form). (For example: Milliliters).
  4. Set the Controlled Substance Schedule: This must be set properly for the medication ordered or it can fail to send or be rejected by the pharmacy if it is not properly set. (For Example: Schedule IV)
  5. Enter Total Quantity & Final Drug Form: For single ingredients or medications this will be the same as the Quantity and Qualifier. (For example: 30 ml)
  6. Enter the Directions: These are the instructions for the patient taking or administering the medication. (For example: take 1 ml every 12 hours as needed for anxiety). Note: This field opens in the structured SIG format. Click the  button to be able to write the directions as a single text field as in the example below.
  7. OPTIONAL: You can enter a duration, pharmacy and note to pharmacist, but these are not required during this initial setup. Users can enter this information at the time of selecting the medication for sending the compound med for a patient.

10. The Compound will now show on the Compound setup screen as shown below. If you need to update the med, you can click Update Medication to modify. The trash can next to the medication can be used to delete the medication altogether.

  • In the image above, you can click ADD PRACTICE, to add this to multiple locations that may be a part of your organization.
  • By default, all users can use this compound. If you want to assign this to only a select list of users, you would click add user. Doing this will ONLY allow the listed users to use this compound.

11. When are ready to add another compound medication, you can click ADD Compound to create another new Compound Medication for users to be able to select.

12. When finished, click Close. The medications can be selected from the drug search window and the compound section. See Document HOW TO PRESCRIBE A COMPOUND MED for steps to prescribe for a patient.
