Pharmacy Error & Surescripts Error Codes

Modified on Tue, 16 Apr 2024 at 11:31 PM

The following codes are Surescripts network electronic prescribing transaction error codes.  These codes attach to prescriptions that had a problem and did not get to the pharmacy.  The following error codes and the descriptions can be helpful to understand why a prescription encountered an error or was marked as error, what happened and what to do to resolve the issue or next steps.  Anytime you see Pharmacy Error as shown in the example below, you can click on the exclamation point and you will be able to see the ERROR number and Description.

Common error codes are discussed below:

Error Code 900 - GENERIC ERROR:

Description: Error code 900 is a catchall for many sub-issues.  Usually this means the pharmacy system is DOWN and cannot currently accept ERX prescriptions.  Another common cause of 900 errors has to do with incorrectly entered patient's demographics; for example if a patient's first name is John and it has been input as John?1 with extract characters such as the question mark and number, both of which are characters that do not belong in the first name field.

Detail: It could be found under the pharmacy as PHARMACY ERROR (by clicking the exclamation point or a pop up in ScriptSure while prescribing.

What to do: Please try to send again later OR send the prescription to a different pharmacy. If it was a failed send prescription, then it would be a pharmacy system issue. Reach out to the pharmacy's support.  If the issue is a patient demographics problem, simply go to the patient demographics and correct any errors you see.

Error Code 900 - NO DEA SCHEDULE

In certain states, certain medications are non-controlled and in other states they are classified as controlled.  The ScriptSure application does not decipher to med as controlled in the states that require these meds.  It is infrequent, but can happen.  The below example of Gabapentin is an example of when you may see this ERROR 900 - NO DEA SCHEDULE, if you send the medication with the default selection of non-controlled.  If you live in a state where Gabapentin is controlled or get this error, you will need to following the steps shown below.  You will want to send gabapentin using the following steps.

For the Gabapentin:

When prescribing the medication Gabapentin in the your State, you have to set the controlled substance setting for the medication to CONTROLLED on the prescription preview screen.  For clarification, in almost every other state Gabapentin is NON-CONTROLLED and due to that, the default setting in ScriptSure is non-controlled.

1. To do this, select gabapentin and get to the prescription preview window.  In the top left of ScriptSure, you will see the class designation.  You can click that (see red arrow below) and change to Schedule IV for example:

Below is the drop-down that will appear

The medication will then show as Controlled and you will be prompted to perform 2FA in order to send this medication.
