Pharmacies Not Sending REFILLS: The 5 Prescription Minimum Rule

Modified on Wed, 4 Sep at 3:24 PM

The following is a rule of the electronic prescribing network, not the ScriptSure product.

Before a provider can begin to receive refills electronically from pharmacies, the provider must create and electronically send 5 new prescriptions to ANY pharmacy within 2 weeks of being registered on the ERX system.  A pharmacy will not be able to send refills to a provider or see that the provider is “refill enabled” until the provider sends the 5 new prescriptions for any patient (these can be controlled or non-controlled medications).

After the prescriber sends their 5 NEW prescription messages from a practice, they will then be “refill enabled” on the network and pharmacies will be able to send refills to the provider practice.

Please note that once the prescriber does send their 5th NEWRX to become “refill enabled” that it may take as much as 14 days for all pharmacies to update their provider listings to reflect the prescriber can receive electronic refills.
