Provider registration limits

Surescripts network. not to be confused with our product ScriptSure Cloud ERX, is the network that all electronic prescriptions are sent across to get to the pharmacies, requires all providers be registered and set service levels for what they want to send and communicate with pharmacies.  When a provider is registered, that provider received an SPI number (Surescripts Provider ID) and set against that SPI, for that specific practice location, are the services the provider is authorized to perform.  Examples of services are sending non-controlled prescriptions is one service, the ability to send controlled prescriptions is another service, being able to receive refill requests from pharmacies is yet another service, and the list goes on.

As a part of registration there are two important limits to be aware.  These limitations apply to all providers that receive an SPI.

Limitation 1:
Surescripts network requires each provider send at least 5 prescriptions within the first 2 weeks of being registered.  If the provider does not do that, the SPI for that user and practice (the provider's registration) is AUTO-INACTIVATED by Surescripts network (not by our company).  When an SPI is inactivated, the provider cannot send prescriptions which results in a message on-screen indicating the provider cannot prescribe the medications.  The 5 prescription rule applies to any prescriptions sent, so a provider can surpass this limitation by sending either controlled or non-controlled medications.

Limitation 2:

A second limitation is every provider, even after surpassing the 5 prescription within 2 weeks requirement, must thereafter send at least one prescription within the 12 months following.  Every time a prescription is written the 12 month period starts over.

The reason Surescripts has these limitations is for the simple reason that they want active  providers registered on the network and using e-prescribing services.

Within ScriptSure it is not easy to see if this limitation has been met as Surescripts does not provide whether or not the provider has surpassed the requirements; meaning ScriptSure application does not receive constant updates from Surescripts about provider status to show on-screen.  A tell-tale of whether or not a provider is still registered can be garnered by attempting to send a prescription and if a message or error/failure ensues that indicates the provider is not actively registered with an SPI number.
